The IBM CCL/374X Challenge

Lowest Cost Residual SNA Function - IBM 3745/3746 FEP vs CCL

We've been asked by some of our IBM 3745 / 3746 customers what we think of the idea of consolidating multiple IBM 3745/3746 communications controllers into one or more emulated communications controllers using the IBM Communication Controller for Linux (CCL) software emulation product.

Mid-Atlantic's position on CCL is that it may be a costly sidestep away from achieving your long-term goal of reducing the SNA component of your network.  A less costly approach is to operate your residual SNA/SNI networking with a modern FEP:  A late model IBM 3745-31A or IBM 3745-61A base frame, and the latest level IBM 3746-900 expansion.  The modern FEP also includes up-level 900 Type 3 processors and the latest IBM Service Processor Type 4, for improved reliability and reduced service time.  The modern FEP minimizes your operating costs for residual SNA/SNI.

If you are not pleased with your current operating cost for residual SNA/SNI, IBM's interim CCL emulator may not be the answer for you.  With our help you can take a critical look at your remaining workload and then optimize it on a modern IBM 3745/3746 FEP with the lowest possible NCP cost.

We feel so strongly about our position that we offer the following CCL Challenge:

Bring us IBM's proposal for consolidating multiple IBM 3745/3746 FEPs using CCL.  Include all of the associated costs including any OSA upgrades, zSeries CPs, CCL one-time and recurring maintenance fees, additional NCP licenses, router upgrades, network management costs, professional service fees and other change costs.  If we cannot provide you with a less complex modern FEP at lower cost, Mid-Atlantic will pay for your CCL license.
